Day 13: White Sulfur Springs to Harper’s Ferry

We had another long-ish day of driving. We took the scenic route rather than the interstates, and it was quite pretty driving through the mountains. There was only one twisting mountain road today, thankfully.

We took a brief detour to the Cass Scenic Railroad State Park, which turned out to be a disappointment. Not much to see at all.

But not long afterwards, we stopped at the Green Bank Observatory. It turns out this is one of the major radio astronomy labs in the US. There was a HUGE radio dish -the signs said it was 2.3 acres across – along with a bunch of other telescopes. We walked around for a bit but there were all these signs about cell phone interference, and that pictures weren’t allowed. But we had a nice picnic on the grounds.

Tomorrow we decided to head into Harper’s Ferry and do the history thing. Lots of that in this area for sure.
