Day 14: Sydney to Saint John

The ferry was quite a bit rougher going home than going to Newfoundland. Or maybe it just seemed that way because it was night and we were trying to sleep. Either way, we were both pretty relieved to disembark early this morning. No more boats for awhile, I think.

The weather was flat out awful most of the day, probably the worst rain we’ve had on our vacation. But we decided to take an unplanned detour to Prince Edward Island – we’ve never been, it’s not that far out of the way, and we had time.

We drove to Charlottetown, which is one of the larger towns on the island, and had a lovely late lunch/early dinner. Definitely some of the best food we’ve had in the last couple of weeks, which of course included mussels. Hey, we had PEI mussels on PEI!

Then we headed off in the direction of Saint John. The weather finally cleared up after we ate, and were able to see a bit more of the landscape. We did see a great blue heron in one of the marshes – that’s only the second one I’ve ever seen.

The island is lovely, at least where we were on the southern coast – all rolling hills and farmland:

The Confederation Bridge was pretty cool as well – it’s 8 miles long, and kind of funky looking:

We definitely need to come back to PEI one day and explore.

From here it’s just a long slog home. Both of us are looking forward to our own bed tomorrow night.
