Day 2: Baker City to Seattle

Lots more driving today.  We left Baker City early this morning and set out for Mount Rainier.  Going north through Oregon was even more beautiful than the day before, but once we hit Washington we landed back in farm country again.  At least this time we got to look at grapes and fruit trees.

Off in the distance we could see volcanoes, and finally figured out we were looking at Mount Hood, Mount Adams and Mount Rainier.  And let me tell you, those are some big mountains – they just dominate the landscape.

After a much longer drive than we anticipated, we finally got past Yakima, and started driving through national forest along some spectacular mountain roads.  We pulled off at an overlook and were treated to an unbelievable view of Mount Rainier:

Sadly, that was the closest we managed to get as the road to the park was closed.  We backtracked and decided to keep to the mountain roads and make our way to Seattle.  Had an okay dinner, took a walk down to the waterfront (very touristy, reminded us of Fisherman’s Wharf in San Francisco) and today is done.
