Day 2: Saint Andrews to Sydney

It was another long day of driving today, but at least we got to look at pretty stuff instead of just highway. As soon as we left the hotel this morning we saw a turkey at the side of the road, then a deer and then another turkey. Wildlife sightings are always a good way to start the day in my book.

We stopped in Moncton to play extremely goofy tourist at Magnetic Hill. You drive up a small hill, put the car in neutral and let it roll back; it feels like you’re rolling uphill. It’s just an optical illusion but you really do get the sensation of defying gravity. (hey, don’t judge us – according to the brochure, at one time this was the third most popular tourist attraction in all of Canada, after Niagara Falls and Banff National Park).

Before we did the hill thing, we stopped in the rest room. Which is notable because it’s the only bathroom we’ve ever been in that included instructions on how to use the toilet. Really, is it necessary to tell people not to stand on the toilet and shit in the tank? We were laughing so hard at the sign we had a little trouble doing what we were there for.

After a lovely lunch in Sackville, we finally made it to Cape Breton. We drove up the eastern side of the island this time (we were mostly on the western side last year). The drive went along the coast of Bras D’Or lake, and was just beautiful:

Along the way into Sydney we passed Resurrection Cemetery. Gotta say, that seems like an oxymoron to both of us.

We had an okay dinner by the harbor. We did see our first giant statue of the trip:

Tomorrow we hit the ferry to Newfoundland. Hoping for a calm crossing…..
