Day 4: Cape Anguille to Norris Point

After a lovely breakfast, we said goodbye to the lighthouse and set out towards Gros Morne National Park. We’re really excited about this part of the trip, we’re expecting it to be the highlight of the vacation.

We had a moose sighting along the way, in the middle of a logging road, hopefully just our first.

Not long after that, we passed a sign saying the moose fencing was starting, and to be cautious. This sparked quite a conversation – since the entire point of having moose fencing on the sides of the highway is to actually keep the moose off the road, why do you need to be cautious? Shouldn’t you have less to worry about? It’s quite puzzling.

We took a brief detour to Baranchois Ponds Provincial Park, which turned out to be a bit of a disappointment. Cool tree, though:

Traveling on, we stopped for lunch in Corner Brook, which turned out to be pretty decent sized town. We were slightly startled to see this store on the drive in, since we’d have taken bets on being just about the only Jews on Newfoundland.

The place we stopped for lunch was nice, but the musical selection did make us long for yesterday’s Neil Diamond and Olivia Newton-John.

Afterwards, we decided to drive up to a local landmark, the Captain Cook Historical Site. The views were pretty spectacular:

It was pretty interesting, it turns out Captain Cook did the first surveys and maps of Newfoundland and Labrador in the 1700s sometime. Apparently they were incredibly accurate, even compared to ones done with modern technology. And it was Cook’s work here in Newfoundland that got him chosen to lead the expedition to Tahiti, New Zealand and the Cook Islands.

Not too much further on, we entered Gros Morne. We took a very short hike to Southeast Brook Falls, which were running really fast. They went considerably further down the hill, but the angle wasn’t quite right to capture it.

Everywhere we turn we’ve seen a beautiful vista, can’t wait to explore the rest of the park over the next couple of days.
