Day 5: Pompano Beach to Cocoa Beach

After saying goodbye to my Mom and Marilyn, we headed north.

We tried so very hard to find a citrus grove – we thought it would be super fun to pick oranges off the tree. Turns out it’s all a lie, you can only get them shipped. I think they’re really importing them from Colombia or something. When we get home I’m going to buy my husband some Florida oranges, apparently it’s the only way to get them. Boo.

After our aborted attempt to pick an orange, we had some lunch in Vero Beach and decided to bypass the highway and drive north on A1A. Much nicer than 95 for sure.

We stopped at a beach and stuck our toes in the sand, just ‘cos.

Rumor is this was a beach where sea turtles hang out but we didn’t see any. 😢

We drove north a bit more, and stopped at the Pelican Island National Wildlife Refuge. We took a nice walk around the lagoon, but despite lots of signs for all the wildlife that live there, we didn’t see anything at all.

The strangler fig was really cool, although maybe not so much for the palm tree. We did see a couple of geckos on the way back to the car but they moved too fast to take a picture. At least there didn’t seem to be any alligators altough we were nervous about it anyway.

I was very disappointed not to see any pelicans, but then when we headed north on A1A again we saw a few in the inlet.

For the record, we decided to stay in Cocoa Beach because that’s where Major Nelson and Jeannie lived. If you don’t know what that is, i recommend Googling it immediately. In fact, we’re watching the pilot episode as we speak.

Tomorrow we’re off to the Kennedy Space Center – definitely one of the highlights of the trip.
