Day 8: Gaspe to Miramichi

Not too much to blog about today. We took a very long drive down the southern coast of the Gaspe peninsula… tons of small fishing villages and farms, and cove after cove.

We had a great lunch in a little local place we found in a town called Bonaventure. It was definitely some of the better food we’ve had in the last few days.

Shortly after Bonaventure, we came across a sign for a strawberry farm that looked intriguing, so of course we had to stop. And boy, we are so glad we did! Naturally, there was a giant strawberry:

They make strawberry wine and spirits on a farm that’s in it’s 7th generation of family ownership. The nicest woman gave us tastings of all their products – rhubarb wine (I actually don’t like rhubarb at all, but the wine was very good – like a dry Reisling), strawberry wine, strawberry aperitif and a strawberry disgestive (like a port). I know you’re all thinking about Boone’s Farm Strawberry Wine at this point, but this stuff is actually real and quite good. Of course we bought some.

A couple of hours later we crossed into New Brunswick, and after 8 days of trying to cope in French (and feeling stupid most of the time), it was actually jarring when people started talking to us in English.

We passed a couple more moose along the side of the road. These must have been older, because both of them looked bigger and darker in color:

Miramichi River is quite pretty. But the town is definitely not anywhere we’d ever want to go again. Good enough for an overnight stay.
